very odd… anyone heard of this? Zoom H1 detecting network satalite tones stopping recording?

October 12, 2012

So tonight, I had a most odd thing happen in an easy recording setup.   I wanted to capture the audio from the presidentual debate for some friends who were going to miss watching it live.   I ran a standard 2 Phono plugs to eighth inch chord out of my satalite box, into the microphone jack of my Zoom H1, which had a fresh AA battery, and empty 16 GB micro SD card. I checked levels, and wated for the time to press record.   I ended up pressing record around 11 minutes before the coverage started.   I didn’t end up sticking around for the debate, but my wife did, and let me know once coverage had seased. I went out, pressed the record button again, to stop the capture, and unplugged things ready to transfer the Wav file to my PC trim ends, and convert to an MP3.   When checking the recorder, I had to play with it, because pressing the play button yielded in no play back, and I ended up with two files.   The first, started when I pressed the record button, around 11 minutes before coverage got under way. Interestingly enough, it ended right after a comercial break, a second or so after the fade out of the comercial.   The second file, started when I pressed record, to stop the recording after coverage had finished up.   So what happened?   Again, the recorder had a fresh Battery and, SD card. It’s not that the battery was dead, because pressing record the second time, must have taken the H1 out of stand by, and started recording to the second file.   Did the recorder stop itself? It looks like so… My wife hadn’t touched it. But why? My only guess, can be the network satalite tones sent down to start the broadcast coverage of the debate, but, the H1 shouldn’t know this was happening, right? and even if it did, would it stop the recording?   All interesting stuff, and a most paculiar insadent.   I don’t have the answer, if anyone who’s more technicly minded than myself does, I’d like to know for the future.   I should have just setup a laptop with external sound card. hmm….
